Joining NTU on 1 December 2026PhD & postdoc opportunities

Opportunities

Interested in joining?

We welcome prospective PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who want to study how physical systems store, learn and process information. Our theory group connects statistical physics, dynamical systems, learning theory, and quantum information science.

To start a conversation, email your CV and a research statement of up to two pages to (thiparatc at gmail dot com). Tell us which questions or problems interest you, and your preferred role and starting date.

Postdoctoral researchers

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong theoretical and/or computational background in quantum machine learning and computation. There are opportunities to work with major quantum companies, and we collaborate with theory/experimental groups across Europe and Asia. See our research themes and recent papers for examples.

A PhD in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field is expected by the start of the appointment. Experience with statistical mechanics and stochastic processes is a plus, while strong experience in quantum information and/or scientific computing is required.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The following NTU schemes offer possible routes to independently funded postdoctoral fellowships. Discuss a suitable project with Thiparat before applying; each scheme has its own eligibility criteria and application windows.

PhD students

We welcome enquiries from students with a strong foundation in physics, mathematics or a related quantitative discipline, and an interest in building, analyzing, and testing theoretical models. You do not need prior experience in every area of the lab. Curiosity, careful reasoning, a willingness to learn, and a perseverance to solve problems matter more.

For an initial discussion, include your CV, academic transcripts, research interests and any papers or thesis work. Tell us whether you have a scholarship or intend to apply for one. Admission and funding are competitive and depend on research fit and current supervision capacity.

Academic preparation and tests

We can supervise students through both the Physics PhD programme and the Mathematical Sciences PhD programme at NTU. Consult the relevant programme page and the SPMS graduate admissions FAQ for academic requirements, GRE/GATE guidance, English-language test requirements and test validity.

How to apply

Contact Thiparat first to discuss the project and prospective supervision before submitting a formal application. Read the NTU research programmes admission guide and the details for the Physics PhD programme or the Mathematical Sciences PhD programme. NTU has August and January intakes; check the application window for your intended intake and scholarship.

PhD scholarships

Explore these scholarships and check each scheme’s eligibility, terms and application deadlines.

Visiting PhD students

PhD students enrolled at another university can contact Thiparat about a focused research visit. Include a short project idea, your CV, proposed dates, your home supervisor’s details and your funding arrangements.

The NTU Visiting Research Students programme provides a non-graduating route, subject to approval by NTU and your home institution. Consult the SPMS visiting-student guidance for the application procedure and allow at least three months before the proposed start date. Agree the visit duration with the host, and arrange funding for fees and living expenses; this route does not provide a lab stipend.

Undergraduate research

NTU undergraduates interested in theoretical physics, learning or quantum information can contact Thiparat about a research project. A brief introduction, your programme and year of study, relevant courses, interests and availability are enough for an initial enquiry.

Possible channels include a Physics Final Year Project (FYP), Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus (URECA), and Odyssey Research, the SPMS summer research programme. Project availability depends on supervision capacity and the programme’s requirements.
